Spring in the Orchard
Spring is truly the loveliest time of year at our Lehigh Valley orchard. Imagine rows of trees blanketed in delicate white flowers, honeybees buzzing dutifully around the blooms, and a sweet, floral fragrance that fills the air.
But before these white blossoms unfurl, a great deal of careful preparation takes place behind the scenes.
Throughout the winter months, our orchard team ventures out with buckets and shears to carefully prune each Asian pear tree.
Pruning in winter is essential. With the trees bare, it’s easier to see their natural structure, which makes pruning much easier. We remove any dead or damaged branches, and encourage healthy, balanced growth in the season ahead.
Dormant pruning also helps prevent the spread of disease and minimizes stress on the trees.
Come early April, our trees enter the green cluster bud stage. On the trees, tiny clusters of buds begin to emerge, a sure sign that spring has officially begun in the orchard.
From here, the transformation happens quickly: delicate white blossoms form on the trees. In order to set fruit, these flowers need help from honeybees. The buzzing sound of the bees means they’re hard at work. They move from flower to flower, spreading pollen and helping the fruit begin to grow.
Spring is one of the most breathtaking seasons in our Pennsylvania orchard, and a beautiful reminder that another legendary harvest is on its way!
