Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Subarashii Kudamono” mean?
“Subarashii Kudamono” is a romaji (English spelling) version of the Japanese text in our logo, and the words translate to “Wonderful Fruit”. We named our orchard this because we believe our Asian Pears are the most wonderful fruit.
Where are Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pears grown?
Our unique, patented Asian Pears are grown in the fertile soil of Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. The Subarashii Kudamono orchard is tucked into the hills of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, where orchards were first planted in the mid-18th century. Here, the fertile, mineral-rich soil promotes bold, nuanced flavor.
When can I get fresh Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pears?
Our season begins in late August, when the trees are full of early fruit, and carries through to December, just in time for the holidays. Shop for fresh fruit between August and December, or browse our pantry items in the off-season.
Do Asian Pears have a gift meaning?
The Japanese Pear is a great gift idea to share to say thank you or good luck – as the pineapple suggests hospitality; an apple salutes educators, asian pears traditionally suggest "good fortune" or good luck, particularly in business.
How do I keep my pears fresh?
Once you receive your box of Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pears, unwrap them and store them in your crisper drawer. When kept chilled, your pears will stay perfectly ripe for up to a month or more.
How long can I store my Asian Pears?
Asian Pears can last for several months, if kept in the refrigerator at around 36 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit
Do you have to peel Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pears?
No! Traditionally Asian Pears are peeled, but we find the skins to be a tasty way to enjoy the benefit of vitamins and minerals. Asian Pears are also full of Lutein and high in fiber.
How are the pears packed for shipping?
Each Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pear is carefully hand-wrapped and packed by our team in custom-designed, padded boxes to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. When your gift recipient opens their box, they’ll be greeted with our traditional presentation—each pear as beautiful and flawless as the day it was picked. It guarantees that the experience of receiving Subarashii Kudamono is as extraordinary as the fruit itself.
What makes the Harvest Box distinct from our classic Asian Pear Gift Boxes?

Imbued with the signature crispness and honeyed sweetness that make our orchard’s fruit legendary, these smaller, early-season Asian Pears are a lovely way to savor our fresh fruit. The Harvest Box contains a medley of mixed variety, palm-sized brown and yellow-skinned Asian Pears that ship directly to you.

Early-season fruit is more petite than our Gift Box fruit, based on where the fruit grows on the tree. Because of their smaller stature, Harvest Box pears are great for fresh eating and perfect for a quick snack.

When are Harvest Boxes available?
We begin hand-picking and packing Harvest Boxes in August. Harvest Boxes are available through October/November, or until our early season fruit sells out.
When is The Variety Collection available?
The Exclusive Variety Collection is a limited edition offering, available from mid-October through the holiday season, or while supplies last. We recommend ordering early to ensure you don’t miss out.
What Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pear varieties might I find in my box?

It depends on the harvest. When you order, we select the variety that’s perfectly ripe on that day. September may include Asaju or RuthiSan, while October might bring you JunoSan or EliSan. November and December could feature AnaSan, LilySan, or SuSan. Each time you order a Fruit du Jour Gift Box, you’re in for a wonderful surprise.

Visit our Varieties page to get to know each of our Asian Pears a bit better.

How will I know which variety is which?
If you order the Exclusive Variety Collection, you will receive a sampler guide to help you explore and savor the unique characteristics of every hand-wrapped Asian Pear inside.
Are Asian Pears Healthy?

One raw, medium Japanese pear (133g) has 50 calories. It contains 13g of carbohydrates and 4g of fiber. Dietary fiber is healthy in many ways. We feel full longer, and fiber stabilizes our blood pressure and cholesterol, which improves heart health.

Asian Pears also contain Vitamin C, which helps our immune system and helps us produce collagen. They also contain Vitamin K, which helps your blood.

The Subarashii Kudamono Asian Pear is naturally very low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

How can I enjoy Dried Asian Pears?
